Continuous Servo AF with Nikon or AI Servo AF for Moving Subjects Canon

In this mode when the shutter release button is pressed halfway the camera focuses continuously. If the subject moves the camera will track the subject and adjust focus as necessary. This is referred to as 'release priortiy'. The advantage of this method is that the shutter can be released (the picture taken) whether or not the subject is in focus.

This may sound very hit and miss but my view is this: I would rather capture the 'peak action' of the subject and risk the possibility of a shot being out of focus than to miss the 'peak' all together. In this way there is a very good chance that one of the several frames taken will be sharp. From my years of using SLR cameras, I know there is every chance that the majority of attempts will (hopefully) be within the depth of field.
