Tip Dont Forget to Physically Transfer Your photos to Your Computer

When you use direct connect, a dock or a memory card reader, it's so easy to view, edit, and use your photos directly that you can forget that they may not have been physically transferred to your computer. Be sure to either use a Save As command in the program you're using or do a physical transfer if you don't want to lose the pictures.

Figure 17-6: One of the easiest ways to preview, transfer and organize your image files is to use a digital asset management program such as ACDSee. On the right are previews of all our pictures from a CompactFlash card that we inserted into a memory card reader. On the left is a hierarchical list of all the folders on our network. To move (or copy) the pictures from the card to a computer on our network, we simply select them (with a mouse click) and then drag them to the appropriate folder. Notice how we organize our photos into folders based on subject. Therefore, these photos from the American Society of Journalists and Authors annual conference will be going into the ASJA folder, in a subfolder marked the 2004 conference. For more on using this kind of software to organize your photos, see Chapter 21.
