Find out how to use an image editor

In digital photography, the pseudo-snap of an electronic shutter is only the beginning. With an image editor, you can do lots of things after the shot to improve your photo or even transform it into an entirely new one. Simple image editors enable you to crop pictures, fix bad color, or remove defects such as those glaring red eyes found in many flash photos. However, you can find even more creative freedom in more advanced image editors that let you do anything from eliminating trees that appear to be growing out of your subject's head to bringing seriously damaged photos back to life. If you want to polish your reputation as an all-around digital photographer, plan on developing at least a modicum of skill with a decent image editing program. Your Preparation Does Not Start with Photoshop

People tend to think of the Photoshop workflow as something that starts in Photoshop. In fact, if you hope to get the best results from Photoshop, the first step in your digital photo-making workflow should be making sure you're prepared. Of course, being completely prepared could entail all manner of complexities. So nope, we're not even going to try that. Instead, this chapter is about making sure you've covered the preplanning basics. If what you need to do entails more than this chapter covers, chances are you've been in business long enough to know what to do and have an assistant or two who might even know more than you do. If you've been shooting film and are just jumping into digital, you may already know most of what's here. If that's the case, at least read the parts of this chapter that have to do with calibrating your camera and using your camera's Histogram feature.

Photoshop Speed Boosts

Photoshop, while not the only piece of software in your digital toolbox, does place more overall demands on your computer than any other program you are likely to run. Freeing yourself from image editors

Digital SLRs do more than change how you take pictures. They change how you make pictures, as well. Perhaps you're a seasoned image editor, accustomed to cropping images in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to mimic the extreme telephoto perspective your previous camera couldn't duplicate. You might have used an image editor's Zoom Blur feature because your digicam's zoom lens didn't zoom fast enough to permit creating that effect in the camera, as shown in Figure 1-8. You've faked fish-eye lens effects because your camera didn't have a fish-eye lens, or you've manually added lens flare instead of trying to create the real thing. Or, you had to blur the background of your images in an image editor because your digital point-and-shoot camera always brought everything into sharp focus (an excellent trait when you want everything in focus, and not so great when you want to use focus selectively for creative effects). Using Photoshops Selection Tools

Photoshop offers a ton of different tools for making selections, each with its own subtle differences. Think of your selection tools as an axe, saw, chisel, or router for images. All of them will grab a hunk of your image, but some of them are precision tools, whereas others are better suited for slightly rougher work. Figure 2.2. Lesson 14Creating Black and White with Photoshop Channels

There are several ways to use channels or the Channel Mixer to create more control over your black-and-white images. Simply open the image in Photoshop and then open the Channels Palette by selecting Window > Channels as shown in Figure 1.11 for Photoshop CS. Unfortunately, Photoshop Elements does not support channels. In the Channels Palette, click on the individual channels (see Figures 1.12 through 1.14) and look at the black-and-white image made from the grayscale version of each channel. Notice the big change in the ways the image looks. Often the green channel (see Figure 1.13) will be the best conversion. To keep one of the channels, drag the other two channels to the little trash can in the palette. Change the image mode to grayscale by clicking on Image > Mode > Grayscale.

Programs for beginners and casual photo editors

Several companies offer programs geared to the photo-editing novice or the digital photographer who only wants to perform simple photo surgery and creative artwork. Just a few choices in this category include ACDSee Photo Editor ( 50, www.acdsystems.com) Adobe Photoshop Elements ( 99, www.adobe.com) Corel PhotoImpact X3 ( 70, www.corel.com) These programs provide all the basic image-correction tools that most casual photographers need, plus plenty of wizards (step-by-step on-screen guides), which walk you through different tasks. Using a Photo Editor to Capture the Entire Image

If you study the flower images from the last section, it might seem that you have a choice of either preserving the detail of the subject and losing a lot of the background or getting most of the photo properly exposed but losing the details on the subject. But there is a third alternative you can use both exposures. Take two photos of the same subject using spot and matrix metering, and then combine the photos in a photo editor. Figure 4-10 shows how this might look. You'll learn how to do this in Chapter 20.

Importing images into image editing software

The normal sequence of events is to use your camera's utility software to transfer one or more picture files from your camera to your computer. Next, you launch your favorite image editing software and open the image file to make some adjustments before finally saving or printing the picture. However, several image editing programs can do the transferring for you, which shortens the whole process. disk drive. Consequently, you can open a picture for editing in your image editing program by simply selecting it in the program's Open dialog box. The only thing you have to do is make sure the camera is connected and turned on (and recognized by Windows) before you attempt to open files in the photo editor. After opening my original colour image in Photoshop, I converted it to greyscale (lmage> Mode> Grayscale) and then back to RGB (lmage> Mode> RGB). To make adjustments to the tone of the image, I used the red, blue and green sliders on the Channel Mixer (lmage> Adjustments> Channel Mixer). This is how I toned my image, but you could also try using Adjustment Layers and Curves (see below).

Tip When You Plan to Edit Your Photos on the Computer Rethink Using JPEG

Kevin Connor, Adobe's director of product management for Photoshop, recommends that you don't save your image in JPEG at all if you are going to edit it. That's because you'll keep saving it to protect your work, and every save in JPEG will destroy more pixels. He suggests that you use an uncompressed file format (TIFF) during your editing process then when you have the final version, you can save it as JPEG. If the only file format your camera uses is JPEG, you can convert it to TIFF for the editing process.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is the main alternative to the Photoshop family, and the interface is shown in figure 2-19. While not as advanced as Photoshop proper, it has proven hugely popular since its release in 1992 and in fact is a very powerful application. The latest version has support for all major cameras, has tools similar to Photoshop, and has a native HDR routine. Unlike Adobe products, Paint Shop Pro is only available for Windows. Do your Photoshop exposure corrections first

The second step is very important always do your exposure corrections in Photoshop first, before any of the other corrections or effects you'll find later in this book. If you don't, you'll find that correcting exposure is extremely hard (if not impossible) to do. For example, look at the difference that exposure correction makes between Figures 3-17 and 3-18. Should I Use Photoshops Camera RAW or the Camera Companys RAW Converter

The problem for Adobe (and other software companies) is that camera manufacturers don't publish their source code. Given the heightened competition among camera brands, that isn't surprising. But it means that to be able to import RAW files into Photoshop, Adobe had to reverse engineer the code for each and every digital camera RAW file format they wanted to support. This unenviable, painstaking job fell to Thomas Knoll, the original creator of Photoshop. Since so much of the camera's inner workings are hidden, Thomas had to use Adobe technology and his own extensive knowledge of imaging science to create Photoshop's Camera RAW utility. He explained to us that this means that if you plan to bring a camera's RAW file into Photoshop through his utility, it is useless to bother with using any of the camera's exposure, tone, or color settings, because the only one the utility can interpret is white balance. All the rest of the data are ignored.

Should I Use Photoshops Camera RAW or the Camera Companys RAW Converter Continued

Of course, using Photoshop isn't a second place option. Adobe has some of the best imaging scientists in the world, and their interpretation of color, tone, and all the other aspects of digital photography is no less than superb. But don't bother taking the camera off default (except with regard to -stops and shutter speeds) when shooting RAW files that you'll be bringing into Photoshop via Adobe's Camera RAW conversion utility. Of course, if you use your digital camera's conversion software, you can still edit the image in Photoshop or any other photo-editing program, once it's been converted to TIFF or JPEG.

How Photoshop Unsharp Mask Works

The most used tool for sharpening is probably straight USM (Unsharp Mask) in Photoshop and nearly all techniques are a variation of it. To get an understanding of the sharpening issues you need to better understand how Photoshop USM works and its inherent limits. Amount defines the strength of the new improved contrast at edges Radius determines how many pixels are involved to build the new edges with higher contrast. Threshold defines how different the sharpened pixels must be from the surrounding area before they are considered edge pixels and sharpened by the filter (Photoshop Help) and is needed to avoid sharpening noise too much. That is why there are a huge number of different sharpening techniques published (most often based on some edge masking) and many Photoshop plug-ins that try to make sharpening easier.

Lesson 22Creating Sepia with Photoshop Method

As with all things Photoshop, there is more than one way to accomplish the same thing. This lesson is a variation on Lesson 2.1. In this lesson, simply open the image in Photoshop and then select Image > Adjustments > Desaturate as shown in Figure 1.5 (in Chapter 1).

What does digital image processing mean In the old days of film, if you wanted to process your images, you had to load the images onto a reel and put it into a tank, all in total darkness. After that you could turn on the lights and begin adding various chemicals and, keeping the temperature constant, agitate the tank to keep the chemicals mixed. Finally, you would hang up the film to dry. Once it was dry, you would Eject the memory card from your desktop. Do not erase or reformat the card on your computer. Check that the photographs transferred okay by looking at them with your image software. You need to consider whether you want to renumber your images. Some photographers will simply use the number assigned by the camera. It might be something like DSCF7479. Others will change it slightly by adding letters that refer to the session, such as Susan01-7479 (Susan01 means the first session with Susan). Finally, others will rename the images entirely to something like Susan01-001,...

Lesson 23Creating Sepia with Photoshop Elements

Since Photoshop Elements does not have the Color Balance layer available, this lesson is the way to accomplish the same thing. This lesson is a variation on Lesson 2.2. In this lesson, simply open the image in Elements and then select Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color as shown in Figure 1.5 (in Chapter 1). Now create an Adjustment layer by choosing Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue Saturation. Since the image was not converted to grayscale, it is still in RGB mode. When the Hue Saturation box appears as shown in Figure 2.10, click on Colorize in the lower right and select a hue. A good starting point is 25. When you click on Colorize, it moves the Saturation slider to 25 as well. Figure 2.11 shows the final image. If you're familiar with Camera Raw in Photoshop CS2, it's easy to see what most of the differences are. From left to right, top to bottom There are only two settings tabsAdjust and Detailbut they are identical to the same tabs in Camera Raw for Photoshop CS2. The bottom line I wouldn't use Photoshop Elements 4 for bulk processing of high-volume shoots with numerous variations of the same image. There is an alternative, however, if you're not quite ready to invest in Photoshop CS2 Raw Shooter Essentials (free) or Premium (only 100 and even more capable than Camera Raw CS2). You'd also have the option of using Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture. You'll find more on these alternatives near the end of this chapter. And Chapter 6 is all about Lightroom, which you will want to download as soon as a beta is available for your computer.

Organizing Photos with Picasa

Picasa provides more powerful photo search tools than EasyShare, making it better suited for larger photo libraries. The program's features and learning curve put it somewhere between Kodak EasyShare and Photoshop Elements. In other words, if EasyShare makes you itch for more, but Photoshop Elements (or its price) scares you off, Picasa may be just right. Like EasyShare, described in the previous section, Picasa draws upon your Windows folder and file system, creating thumbnails of your photos that appear in its window. Unlike EasyShare, though, Picasa lets you act directly upon your Windows folders. When you move a photo from one Picasa folder to another, you're actually moving the file in Windows. Picasa also gives you features like Collections, Labels, and Keywords that give you more photo-handling options than you get in Windows XP. Note Google lets you download Picasa at no charge. Affordable Image Editors

If you search the Web for the best imaging software, you'll be tempted to buy Photoshop CS (Creative Suite), the most powerful program and the one that most professional photographers and studios use. As discussed later, this 649 product certainly has merit, but it is expensive and complicated. You can get excellent results with more affordable software, often without a steep learning curve. Most photo enthusiasts can find at least one image-editing program in the under- 129 category that will meet or exceed, their needs (see Figure 4.1). If you buy a digital camera, it will be bundled with software for convenient downloading of images, a file browser for viewing and filing images, plus software for some basic image editing cropping, color, brightness and contrast adjustment, and some other enhancement features. These programs are often proprietary, designed for a specific camera manufacturer there are far too many to even list in this chapter. Other camera, scanner, and printer kits...

Getting Your Photos into Picasa

When you download and run Picasa's installer, the final setup screen presents you with a handful of options. Before launching Picasa for the first time, the installer offers to place the program's icon on your desktop, in the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, and so on. Turn off the checkboxes if you don't want to deal with such clutter. The last checkbox is a sneaky bit of marketing It offers to make Google your browser's default search engine. (Hey, unlike other free programs, Picasa isn't always in your face trying to sell you photo prints or t-shirts, so cut Larry and Sergey some slack.) The first time you fire up Picasa, it rounds up all the photos on your computer. When it's done, Picasa fills your screen with the main Library view window, described next. Note Picasa organizes and keeps track of both digital photo files and digital video files. Much of the discussion about digital photo files in this section applies to digital video files, too.

Configuring Photoshops Color Settings

Okay, so how do you actually use color spaces The first order of business is to properly configure Photoshop's Color Settings options, seen in Figure 3-36, so that unwanted and unexpected conversions do not take place when you open an image. Photoshop defines separate working spaces for RGB, Grayscale, and CMYK configure your working spaces, color management policies, and conversion options in Photoshop, go to Edit> Color Settings. I'll ignore the CMYK and Spot working spaces, as both are beyond the scope of this book. The choice of your RGB working space determines the gamut of colors available for any new document you create. In essence, you're choosing the size and range of your color palette. In addition, each time you open an existing image, Photoshop will look to see if its embedded color space profile matches your chosen working space. I'll cover what happens when they don't match in the next section, but there's a lot less potential for user error if your default working...

Lesson 31Starting with a Color Image in Photoshop Method

Simply open the image in Photoshop and then create a new Channel Mixer layer. To create the Channel Mixer layer, in the Layers Palette (Window > Layers) create a new layer by clicking on the small black-and-white circle as shown in Figure 1.15 in Chapter 1. In the pop-up menu, select the Channel Mixer (again in Figure 1.15). The Channel Mixer will appear (see Figure 1.16). Select Monochrome and Preview in the Channel Mixer. Adjust the settings to your taste as in Lesson 1.5. This will change your image into a grayscale (black-and-white) image and show you what it looks like. Now make sure that the Channel Mixer layer is highlighted and go to the opacity control in the top right. Move the opacity to the left to add a bit of color. Lesson 32Starting with a Color Image in Photoshop Method

Start this lesson by opening your color image with Photoshop. Create a duplicate layer by using the flyout menu that you get when clicking on the right pointing triangle in the top of the Layers Palette (see Figure 3.3). Alternatively, you can go to the top menu and choose Layer > Duplicate Layer. Change this layer to black and white by selecting the Desaturate command ( Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or Cmd Ctrl+U). Make sure that the duplicate layer and not the background is selected before you do this. Now your image should be in black and white with a color background layer. Judging by the overwhelming acceptance by photographers and the rave reviews it has received from all quarters, Adobe Photoshop deserves its bestseller status. The new CS may seem expensive at 649, and many of you will probably want one of the affordable programs discussed earlier. Photoshop CS2 Launches a Winner

Retouching and correction technique doesn't change much over the years. Photoshop 3, released in 1994, revolutionized workflows by introducing layers, which are critical to many of the moves shown in this book. While I haven't busted out my copy of Photoshop 3 to check, to the best of my recollection almost every trick you have read or will read about here could also have been done in that ancient program. This lesson will show you a way to create a sepia image with a hand-colored look more quickly than having to go through the actual hand painting. There are times when you need something quickly, and here is a way to do it. Open the image in Photoshop and then create a Hue Saturation layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue Saturation). Automating Profile Assignments in Photoshop

Chances are you have captured a series of images that will need to be based on a single digital camera profile. While you will likely need to create a different camera profile for each photo shoot, it can still be a significant workflow benefit to automate the process of assigning a profile to a series of images. You can automate the process by creating an action in Photoshop 7. Click Record, and Photoshop will record the steps you take from this point forward until you stop recording. Another benefit of RAW capture is that it allows you to preserve high-bit data for your images. Color Image Enhancement

The image enhancement techniques discussed previously have all been applied to monochrome images. This section considers the enhancement of natural color images and introduces the pseudocolor and false color image enhancement methods. In the literature, the terms pseudocolor and false color have often been used improperly. Pseudocolor produces a color image from a monochrome image, while false color produces an enhanced color image from an original natural color image or from multispectral image bands.

Natural Color Image Enhancement

The monochrome image enhancement methods described previously can be applied to natural color images by processing each color component individually. This comprises the class of intracomponent processing algorithms. There is also a class of inter-component processing algorithms in which color pixels are combined on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Finally, there is a class of vector processing algorithms. For some image enhancement algorithms, there are computational advantages to processing in a luma-chroma space, such as YCbCr, or a lightness-chrominance space, such as L*a*b* . As an example, if the objective is to perform edge crispening of a color image, it is usually only necessary to apply the enhancement method to the luma or lightness component. Because of the high-spatial-frequency response limitations of human vision, edge crispening of the chroma or chrominance components may not be perceptible. Lesson 61Using a Brush in Photoshop and Elements Example

This lesson utilizes the Art History brush in Photoshop. You can also use the Impressionist brush in Photoshop Elements that operates in a similar manner. The purpose is to change the photograph into an impressionistic version of the image. Although there are filters you can click on to get a one-step impressionistic look, doing it slowly and carefully by hand with this method will provide a much more satisfactory result. Each section or area of the image can be given the appropriate amount of adjustment. Although this procedure can be a little tedious and time consuming, the technique is rather easy. Open your image and make all adjustments to the image such as Levels and Curves or Brightness and Contrast until you are satisfied with the way your image looks before any manipulation. Next select the Art History brush (see Figure 6.2). In this example the subject matter has changed, but the same procedures will be followed as in Lesson 6.1. First, open your image in Photoshop or Elements (see Figure 6.8) and make any adjustments and corrections to make it look the way you want before you begin manipulating it. As before, select the Art History brush in Photoshop (or the Impressionist brush in Elements). Set the brush size and area to about 15 or 20 to begin with and vary according to the effect you are after. Interface Differences between Photoshop CS3 and CS4

Most of the Photoshop examples in this book are based on the CS5 version of the program. Although the overall concept hasn't changed, the interface in the CS4 CS5 version is very different from that in CS3. Not only the base colors, but also the general compactness and the ability to work non-mod-ally (or semi-modally) with Layers are new. A Modal program structure means that you have to close one tool before opening another. Non-modal functionality makes it possible to create a new layer (described in section 7.3) without first having to close the currently active dialog. This makes the workflow smoother and allows you to jump back and forth easily between correction steps without having to painstakingly save and record each step first. Most of the screenshots in this book were created using Photoshop CS5 in Mac OS X, but the Windows versions are not significantly different. We sometimes use screenshots from older program versions for the sake of clarity.

Using Profiles and Soft Proofing with Photoshop

I will now walk you through a few steps of a color-managed workflow. This will be an abbreviated tour focusing primarily on the color-management aspects I go into a more complete printing workflow in Chapter 8. Sketching In Photoshop Mobile

You can turn a photograph into a sketch using Photoshop Mobile. All you do is open PS Mobile, pull up the flower you want sketched (say, a flower like you see in Figure 5.4), and then navigate to the Sketch option in the top menu bar To vary your sketch, you slide your finger across the screen. When you're finished tweaking your flower (playing around with moving your finger across the screen), navigate to Save and Exit, and voil , you have a sketched flower like the one you see in Figure 5.5. The nice thing about PS Mobile is that the program doesn't reduce the resolution of the tweaked photo, making it a prime candidate for blowing up and hanging on your wall. Incorporating Another Editor Into Your Iphoto Workflow

Adding an external image editor such as Photoshop Elements to your toolbox doesn't have to mean giving up iPhoto. The two programs work well together. You have a couple of options for adding Elements to your iPhoto workflow. As a Replacement If you plan to use Elements for all your editing chores, you can set iPhoto to hand off images to Elements whenever you double-click on a photo. To set this up, open iPhoto's General preference pane and set the Double-Click Photo option to Opens Photo In. In the resulting dialog box, navigate to Applications Adobe Photoshop Elements 3, and double-click on the program's icon. As a Supplement Perhaps you want to use Elements to beautify only your most precious photos, and would prefer to use iPhoto's built-in tools for the rest of your editing chores. In that case, follow the previous steps to set Elements as your external image editor. When you're done, return to the General preference pane. Cropping Photos with Picasa

When you shoot photos, it's best to compose the picture in the camera exactly the way you want it in your prints. Unfortunately, that noble and artistic goal isn't always possible. For example, sometimes when shooting a sports event or a performance, you can't get close enough to the subject. Other times, there's something in the frame that you didn't notice when you were focusing on the subject. Or perhaps you want your image to be a perfect square instead of the rectangular format your camera shoots. Whatever the reason, Picasa is there to help you crop your image. (For a word of caution about when not to crop, check out the box in Section 9.3.1 .) Picasa makes it easy to crop any photo so it'll fit exactly on standard print paper (4 x 6, 5 x 7, and 8 x 10), but you can crop to any size as long as it's rectangular.

Painter X to Photoshop CS

In Painter go to File> Save As and select RIFF and you will then be able to edit this layer in the future. If you are working in any of these special types of layers you may wish to save two versions, one in RIFF format in case you need to change something later and another in PSD format to transfer immediately into Photoshop. Layer Composite Methods will translate pretty closely into Layer Blend Modes in Photoshop. The modes that are exclusive to Painter will go to Normal mode, which will usually look totally different. If the mode fails to translate correctly it may be necessary to flatten the picture within Painter before saving it.

Choose an Image Editor

Before you can get started editing images, you need an image editing program. Any one will do, at least at first. For the most part, all image editors give you the ability to do certain things, such as That's certainly a quick overview of image editing, but the point is that there are a lot of image editors around that will get the job done. Which one is for you Well, you might want to start with a free one. If your digital camera came with an image editor of some sort, you might want to give it a spin and see if you like the way it works. Ultimately, though, you may be dissatisfied with the bundled software and decide to invest in a better program. There are two sorts of image editing programs that you're likely to encounter automatic and manual packages. The Latest Version Of Photoshop Is Definitely Worth The Upgrade

EVERY 18 TO 24 months, just when it seems like you've finally gotten used to all the features in the current version of Adobe Photoshop, a new version comes out. This time it's CS5 ( 700, direct, for the full version 200, upgrade), which is actually the 12th iteration of this mother of all image editors.

The image editing program

An image editing application is a computer program that can be loaded onto your machine and then used to change and enhance your digital pictures. There are many different programs available for installation on your computer. Some are used for word processing, chart creation or working out the family budget, but it is those that are specifically designed for manipulating pixels and fixing up digital photographs that we will look at here.

What are the most important image editing programs

First of all, there is no single image editing program which can be described as the best or most important. Almost all of the most common programs sufficiently master the basic functions needed for editing a digital image. The differences lie in the additional features offered. Although they cannot be clearly categorised, a division can be made between programs that have been created for professional and for personal use. Adobe's Photoshop and Painter from Corel are examples of software designed for professional use. These programs offer a wide variety of features, including the simulation of natural painting and editing methods. These features do, however, have their price. The development in the area of digital imaging is illustrated by, among other things, the rapidly increasing demand for image editing software.

Open an Image in Paint Shop

Since I'm going to spend a lot of time in Paint Shop Pro over the next few chapters, let's take a quick look at how to use the program. Start Paint Shop Pro by choosing it from the Windows Start menu. There are three ways to open an image in Paint Shop Pro you can use whichever method you find easiest. 3. Open the folder with the image you want to open directly on the Windows desktop, and drag the image file from the folder to the Paint Shop Pro window. If Paint Shop Pro isn't on top, you can do this instead Drag the image file out of the folder and hold it over the Paint Shop Pro button in the task bar at the bottom of the Windows desktop. Don't let go of the file yet just hold it there for a few moments. Paint Shop Pro should pop to the front. Finally, just move the file up to the Paint Shop Pro window and let go.

Stitch them all together back home using an image editor or stitching software

Packages such as PhotoStitch (furnished free with Canon cameras for Windows and the Macintosh) or Photoshop and Photoshop Elements' built-in PhotoMerge panorama capabilities (see Figure 6-12) are easy to use and a lot of fun. The Adobe Camera Raw Advantage

The process of converting a digital image from its latent state, as it exists after exposure on your camera's storage media, to the edited version in Photoshop is extremely complex and a detailed discussion of this process is beyond the range of this book. (See Appendix S for reference to a book that will fully explain the details of working with images in Adobe Camera Raw.) The important implication of all of this is that any image corrections you make at this stage of the process are fundamental and generally much less damaging to the quality of your image than editing done in Photoshop. There are also ways that you can color-correct and otherwise manipulate images during the conversion process that simply can't be duplicated in Photoshop. Morphological Image Processing

Morphological image processing is a type of processing in which the spatial form or structure of objects within an image are modified. Dilation, erosion and skeletonization are three fundamental morphological operations. With dilation, an object grows uniformly in spatial extent, whereas with erosion an object shrinks uniformly. Skele-tonization results in a stick figure representation of an object. The basic concepts of morphological image processing trace back to the research on spatial set algebra by Minkowski (1) and the studies of Matheron (2) on topology. Serra (3-5) developed much of the early foundation of the subject. Steinberg (6,7) was a pioneer in applying morphological methods to medical and industrial vision applications. This research work led to the development of the cytocomputer for high-speed morphological image processing (8,9).

Which image editor should you use It could be argued that Adobe Photoshop is the best image-editing software on the planet. It could also be argued that owning your own private jet is the best way to travel around the country. Not everyone can afford private jets or Photoshop, and not everyone wants to spend time learning how to pilot them. That's why so many alternatives to Adobe's flagship image editor have flourished. Some image editors have every imaginable feature, but others take a bare-bones approach. Photoshop Features Especially Useful for Making Montages

Making montages can be much more complex than making collages because the bits and pieces of photos that make up the whole have to look as though they were all photographed in the same place and at the same time. That is, the angle of lighting of objects in the background photo has to match in the lighting of the imported objects. So does the color temperature, the perspective, and the angle of view of each imported object. To make matters worse, it is often impossibleor at least impracticalto find photos that are an exact match. This section will show you some Photoshop features that help you credibly fake the appearance of the matching photo. Especially notable among these features are the new Warp and Smart Object.

Lesson 92Photoshop and the Smudge Tool

You will probably find that it helps to zoom into the area that you are working on to at least 50 , 66.7 , or even 100 so that you can better see what you are doing. When you are zoomed in, keep in mind that you will have to exaggerate the effect somewhat to compensate for reducing it when you print it out. Keep in mind the final size at which you want to display the image before you begin. Start in one corner and move across the image to the other side and then back. Zoom back out to see if your technique is too strong or not strong enough. It is easy in Photoshop to undo and redo a small section if you check it periodically. It takes a long time to work on the image, over an hour in the case of Figure 9.10. But the results are worth it. The effect is much more unique than those in Lesson 9.1, where only filters are used.

M My ith all the seemingly miraculous things that you can accomplish with WW image editing tools, it would be easy to assume that there's nothing you can't do. You'd think that you could take any image, in any condition, and make it beautiful but is that really the case Not always. Although you certainly can do a great deal to repair serious tears, rips, stains, and scratches, as well as the effects of aging and improper photographic technique, you can't solve every problem every time at least not easily. You can't, for example, take a photo in which everything is out of focus and make it as crisp and clear as the photographer probably intended. If, however, one part of the photo is in focus and the other parts are a blurry distraction, you can blur them out even further so that they're just a pleasant backdrop to the properly focused portion. To start your introduction to image processing, we will concentrate on the following basic steps that most photographers perform after each shooting session No matter what image editing program you are using, the tools and features designed to perform these steps are often those first learned. Using Photoshops bicubic interpolation

You can use Photoshop to increase file size (sometimes known as upressing). Basically, the program makes an educated guess and creates new pixels to stretch the resolution of your image file. You implement this technique through the program's image size function by choosing File C> Image C> Image C> Size, picking Bicubic Interpolation, and then increasing the resolution as much as you dare. Unfortunately, this is only good for about a 50 percent increase in resolution at best.

Adjusting Specific Areas in Photoshop

The majority of your global corrections, corrections applied to the entire image, will be completed in Lightroom to your camera raw file. This will give you the best quality, because these changes are made to the unprocessed file, whereas corrections made in Photoshop are always made to a processed file and cause some degradation in image quality. The amount of quality loss is determined by the quality of the original and the severity of the correction. Nevertheless, the key point to remember is that you want to perform as many of your corrections as possible within Lightroom, using Photoshop primarily for adjusting localized areas within the photo, compositing images, or performing other advanced multi- image techniques such as extending the dynamic range, creating a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image, or building a panorama. These are the areas in which Photoshop excels, and one of the fundamental skills common to Photoshop's advanced techniques requires the use of layer masks.

They might think they have a straight image, only to be unpleasantly surprised when opening the picture on the computer to see that the horizon line is dipping slightly to the right. Thanks to Photoshop, it's easy to straighten those images. In Photoshop CS, there's a handy-dandy little ruler that will help you find accurate horizontal and vertical angles. What, you don't see it in the floating Tools palette That's because it's hidden behind the Eyedropper icon. Click on the Eyedropper, hold down the mouse button, and you'll see a Color Sampler tool and a Measure tool. Select the Measure tool. Using your mouse, place the tool cursor in your image window on one end of the line you wish to straighten and then drag it across to the other end of the line. Then, Adobe added the Patch tool to enhance this type of retouching. And what a good addition the Patch tool is. It's faster and much better at blending subtle tones. If I were working in Photoshop Elements instead of CS, the Clone Stamp would be the tool of choice. You'd think that those little ole wires would be easy to remove, but blue-sky tones are subtle, so they're difficult to retouch seamlessly.

The adept digital photographer can overcome these limitations by taking two pictures of the same subject exposing one for the light tones and the other for the dark tones and then combining them in Photoshop 7 or CS. Custom grayscale conversions in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

Photoshop Elements 5.0 contains a custom Convert to Black and White feature (left) that lets you select from a range of conversion styles and then customize the grayscale mapping by adjusting how each color is converted. Click on the Sponge tool, and at the top of the contextual menu bar, choose Desaturate, as shown in Figure 6-16. As long as you show a little restraint with the technique, the results look quite natural. First, open your portrait in any version of Photoshop. Color correction is one of the most difficult tasks in digital photography. You can spend a lot of time fiddling with it and still not get the results you want. This hack will change all that. By combining two handy functions in Photoshop CS, you can correct color quickly and accurately, enabling you to process an entire folder of images in short order. Open another image from the same batch of photos. This time, choose the Auto Color function (Imaged Adjustments * Auto Color). Photoshop will use the settings you established earlier to correct the picture. Many times, you'll be finished at this point, because the color correction will be close enough for most tastes. If so, save the image and move on.
