Your Preparation Does Not Start with Photoshop

People tend to think of the Photoshop workflow as something that starts in Photoshop. Freeing yourself from image editors

Digital SLRs do more than change how you take pictures. They change how you make pictures, as well. Perhaps you're a seasoned image editor, accustomed to cropping images in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to mimic the extreme telephoto perspective your previous camera couldn't duplicate. Do your Photoshop exposure corrections first

The second step is very important always do your exposure corrections in Photoshop first, before any of the other corrections or effects you'll find later in this book. Should I Use Photoshops Camera RAW or the Camera Companys RAW Converter Continued

Of course, using Photoshop isn't a second place option. Adobe has some of the best imaging scientists in the world, and their interpretation of color, tone, and all the other aspects of digital photography is no less than superb. But don't bother taking the camera off default (except with regard to -stops and shutter speeds) when shooting RAW files that you'll be bringing into Photoshop via Adobe's Camera RAW conversion utility. Of course, if you use your digital camera's conversion software, you can still edit the image in Photoshop or any other photo-editing program, once it's been converted to TIFF or JPEG.

Importing images into image editing software

The normal sequence of events is to use your camera's utility software to transfer one or more picture files from your camera to your computer. Next, you launch your favorite image editing software and open the image file to make some adjustments before finally saving or printing the picture. However, several image editing programs can do the transferring for you, which shortens the whole process. If Windows recognizes your camera or card reader as a mass storage device (and most such devices that connect to the computer via USB and FireWire are), the device and all the files on it appear to Windows just like any other disk drive. Consequently, you can open a picture for editing in your image editing program by simply selecting it in the program's Open dialog box. The only thing you have to do is make sure the camera is connected and turned on (and recognized by Windows) before you attempt to open files in the photo editor. How Photoshop Unsharp Mask Works

The most used tool for sharpening is probably straight USM (Unsharp Mask) in Photoshop and nearly all techniques are a variation of it. To get an understanding of the sharpening issues you need to better understand how Photoshop USM works and its inherent limits. Amount defines the strength of the new improved contrast at edges Radius determines how many pixels are involved to build the new edges with higher contrast. Threshold defines how different the sharpened pixels must be from the surrounding area before they are considered edge pixels and sharpened by the filter (Photoshop Help) and is needed to avoid sharpening noise too much. That is why there are a huge number of different sharpening techniques published (most often based on some edge masking) and many Photoshop plug-ins that try to make sharpening easier.

What does digital image processing mean In the old days of film, if you wanted to process your images, you had to load the images onto a reel and put it into a tank, all in total darkness. After that you could turn on the lights and begin adding various chemicals and, keeping the temperature constant, agitate the tank to keep the chemicals mixed. Finally, you would hang up the film to dry. Once it was dry, you would Eject the memory card from your desktop. Do not erase or reformat the card on your computer. Lesson 23Creating Sepia with Photoshop Elements

Since Photoshop Elements does not have the Color Balance layer available, this lesson is the way to accomplish the same thing. This lesson is a variation on Lesson 2.2. In this lesson, simply open the image in Elements and then select Enhance Adjust Color Remove Color as shown in Figure 1.5 (in Chapter 1). Now create an Adjustment layer by choosing Layer New Adjustment Layer Hue Saturation. Since the image was not converted to grayscale, it is still in RGB mode. When the Hue Saturation box appears as shown in Figure 2.10, click on Colorize in the lower right and select a hue. A good starting point is 25. Organizing Photos with Picasa

Picasa provides more powerful photo search tools than EasyShare, making it better suited for larger photo libraries. If you search the Web for the best imaging software, you'll be tempted to buy Photoshop CS (Creative Suite), the most powerful program and the one that most professional photographers and studios use. Simply open the image in Photoshop and then create a new Channel Mixer layer. To create the Channel Mixer layer, in the Layers Palette (Window Layers) create a new layer by clicking on the small black-and-white circle as shown in Figure 1.15 in Chapter 1. You can turn a photograph into a sketch using Photoshop Mobile. An image editing application is a computer program that can be loaded onto your machine and then used to change and enhance your digital pictures. Lesson 92Photoshop and the Smudge Tool

You will probably find that it helps to zoom into the area that you are working on to at least 50 , 66.7 , or even 100 so that you can better see what you are doing. When you are zoomed in, keep in mind that you will have to exaggerate the effect somewhat to compensate for reducing it when you print it out. Keep in mind the final size at which you want to display the image before you begin. Start in one corner and move across the image to the other side and then back. Zoom back out to see if your technique is too strong or not strong enough. It is easy in Photoshop to undo and redo a small section if you check it periodically. It takes a long time to work on the image, over an hour in the case of Figure 9.10. But the results are worth it. Adobe Photoshop Elements is a powerful junior version of the full Photoshop program. Elements has most of the functionality, but it lacks some of the features that the average photographer might be able to get along without. At about 100, it's more affordable, too. Elements, shown in Figure 11-2, shares much of the same user interface with Photoshop. Although it's missing a few features that Adobe deems professional, such as Layer Masks and CMYK editing, Elements includes most of the basic image-editing tools that the typical digital photographer needs on a regular basis. Follow these steps to create an action in Photoshop 1. In Photoshop, open an image by choosing File O Open and then browsing to where your image is stored. Setting colour preferences in Photoshop

This is the first stage in the process of colour management. It does not need to be done each time the application is opened up, but should be done before you start. The colour preferences define the overall default behaviour of Photoshop. To set the preferences go to the edit menu and select colour settings. A window will open up with a number of default settings. These define the working colour spaces and colour management policies. The default RGB colour space is generally sRGB. As stated before, sRGB is a semi-standardized colour space optimized for multimedia images. Unless all of your images are to be viewed on screen, it is suggested that you change this to Adobe RGB (1998), because its larger gamut is more likely to match the range of printers you may use. Whats not so good about Photo Paint

Perhaps the worst thing about PhotoPaint is that it's available only as part of the CorelDRAW graphics suite. That's also one of the best things because the Corel Graphics applications are a powerful combination. At a 159 upgrade price for the downloadable version (it's a 179 upgrade if you want the retail package), the CorelDRAW graphics suite is a good value, provided that you need the main CorelDRAW program and any of the other components of the suite. However, that might be a lot to pay for PhotoPaint alone, especially because other image editors in this tier are available for around 100.

Where to get Photo Paint

To get PhotoPaint, you need to purchase the CorelDRAW graphics suite for about 159 to 400, depending on whether you are upgrading or buying it as a stand-alone product. The suite includes the CorelDRAW graphics program, PhotoPaint, PowerTRACE (a bitmap-to-vector conversion utility), Corel CAPTURE (a screen capture utility), and an assortment of 1,000 fonts and 10,000 clip art images. Corel Paint Shop

Corel Paint Shop Pro, shown in Figure 3-7, is one of the leading second-tier image editors. It's a general-purpose image editor for Windows only that has gained a reputation as the poor man's Photoshop for providing a substantial portion of Photoshop's capabilities at a fraction of the cost. The program lists for about 100, but you can often find it for sale at a substantial discount. In recent years, however, Corel has stuffed in the features, going beyond achieving feature parity with Photoshop in many areas and exceeding Adobe's flagship product with specialized tools and effects. Indeed, the program has more than 500 special effects, counterparts to Photoshop's filters, that can add an amazing number of interesting looks to your photos, from the fading of an aged newspaper clipping to faux infrared transformations. Whats good about Paint Shop

Paint Shop Pro has been around for a while, so the program has had time to evolve and mature. Over that time, it has developed a reasonably robust feature set and a refined user interface. Many people rate Paint Shop Pro as the easiest to use of the general-purpose image editors, and it's among the lowest priced programs in its class. The latest version, Paint Shop Pro X, includes a friendly Learning Center that can show you how to edit your photos, remove objects from your photos, and assemble composite photos. If you just want your photo fixed, fast, Smart Photo Fix corrects color, exposure, and lighting problems. The new Makeover Tools remove blemishes, whiten teeth, lather on a suntan, remove wrinkles, and zap red eyes. This version adds 16-bit editing useful for those who have cameras that can produce files with expanded color palettes advanced CMYK and color management, and screen calibrations options you might have needed Photoshop for in the past.

Adobe Photoshop Atone at the

Adobe Photoshop, as shown in Figure 3-1, is the big kahuna of image editing programs. Available for both Windows and Mac OS, it is the de facto industry standard by which all the other image editing programs are measured. The breadth and depth of the Paint Shop Pro feature set is a little uneven. The program shows surprising depth in some areas (such as the availability of layers) and shallowness in others (such as the limited choice of selection and paint tools). Also, some tools (such as the Histogram Adjustment command) require more knowledge and experience to use effectively than do the corresponding tools in some of the other editors.

Whats good about Photoshop

Photoshop didn't attain its stature as the leading high-end, image editing program by accident. It has a well-deserved reputation for delivering a very complete feature set. In short, this is one powerful program. No matter what you want to do with an image, odds are that Photoshop contains the tools that enable you to do it. Photoshop can read, write, and manipulate all the industry-standard file formats (such as TIFF and JPEG, which are the two that most digital photographers will use almost exclusively) as well as many not-so-standard formats. You can resample images to change the image size, resolution, and color depth. Photoshop excels at providing images that are optimized for specialized uses, such as commercial printing and Web graphics. It is very tempting to let the camera's automatic exposure modes take control. The thought is always there that Photoshop is available to adjust and fix something that is not quite right, so get the pictures taken. Photoshop can do many things. What it cannot do is make up for data not present in the original exposure. That is what is lacking if you get the exposure wrong in the camera. It may seem like a small exposure error but problems will very soon appear when the image is adjusted, even with a RAW 16-bit image. The issues of overexposure and blown-out highlights are now well known to digital photographers who take care not to introduce this kind of problem into their images. There is a popular belief that an underexposed photograph can always be saved. While there is some merit in erring on the side of underexposure, there are inherent problems in relying on Photoshop always to lighten up your images. Additional Photoshop Tools Masks

When you select part of an image, the area that is not selected can be masked or protected from editing. When creating a mask, you isolate and protect areas of an image as you apply color changes, filters, or other effects to the remainder of the image. Masks are also utilized for complex image editing, such as gradually applying color or filter effects to an image.

File Formats for Image Editing

If you own an advanced image-editing program, you may have noticed that it includes numerous choices for working in various formats and for saving images in those formats (see Figure 10.7). Most are intended for images you plan to use on the Web, for use by printing or publishing companies, or for storing vector drawings, documents, artwork, and so on. Photo and imaging enthusiasts generally use JPEG, TIFF, or a proprietary or native format such as Adobe's PSD (Photoshop Document). Consequently, I'll discuss only these options.

Second Tier Image Editors

The second-tier image editors are a diverse lot. They all have the ability to Chapter 3 expensive than Photoshop. However, that's where the uniformity ends. Some of the programs in this tier are niche products that excel at dealing with particular kinds of images, whereas others are general-purpose image editors with nearly as much versatility as Photoshop cs. Adding Effects with Picasa

Picasa's special effects collection ranges from the practical to the whimsical. For example, many photos benefit from a gentle application of Sharpen (improves focus) or Saturation (deepens color) and they still resemble the original shot. Apply Soft Focus or Focal Black and White and you're moving into the realm of drama and special effects. Effects, like most of Picasa's tools, are intuitive and clearly labeled. For example, the Effects panel shows you thumbnail previews of each effect (Figure 13-4 ). And if that's not clear enough, you can read a brief text description when you move your cursor over each effect.

Whats good about Photo Paint

Corel PhotoPaint is a respectable product as a standalone image editor. However, its greatest strength is its integration with CorelDRAW and the rest of the Corel graphics suite. If you use CorelDRAW to create and edit graphics, you've probably got PhotoPaint installed on your computer, and you'll feel right at home using the product. Aperture and Adobe Photoshop

Although Aperture has everything you'll need for processing the majority of your images, there will be occasions when you need to turn to an external image editor. For most people that's going to be Photoshop, but you can use any imaging editing application in conjunction with Aperture. You define the external image editor you want to use in the Export tab of the Preferences window. Click the Choose button to navigate to the application, then click Select. Choose the file format that you want to use from the External Editor File Format pop-up menu. The range of file formats you can work with has been extended in Version 2.1 of Aperture and now includes 8-bit as well as 16-bit PSD and TIFF files (Fig. 7.15). The default resolution for opening files in your external image editor is 72dpi. Note that this doesn't affect the number of pixels in the image, only the resolution. Lesson 124Simulating Infrared in Photoshop

The final way of generating an infrared look is to create one in Photoshop from your color digital image. This will not be a real infrared image, of course, but depending on the image and your Photoshop skills, you can get very close. Like most things in Photoshop, there are many ways of accomplishing this. This lesson will show one of the easier methods to get you started. For other techniques, do an online search of the web for infrared Photoshop, which will turn up thousands of links. Besides these techniques, Photoshop CS3 has an infrared preset built in the new Black & White dialog box. In addition, there are plug-ins available for older versions of Photoshop that will create infrared images from color ones automatically for you.

Undoing Picasas Effects

In Picasa, there's nothing you can do that can't be undone. Here are your options Cancel . When you're editing an effect, click the Cancel button at the bottom of the panel. Picasa undoes any work you've done in that window and returns you to the regularly scheduled Effects panel. Undo Redo . Down at the bottom of the Effects panel (in Edit View) is Picasa's Undo button. It has a great memory, but it's very forgiving. The Undo button remembers the edits or effects you've applied, and it even tells you right there on the button. If the last thing you did was apply the Tint effect, the button is labeled Undo Tint. Click the button and the Tint is gone. Now the button may read Undo Crop or Undo Auto Contrastwhatever you last did before applying Tint. The button lets you step backwards through every change you've made. Whats good about Photo Impact

PhotoImpact is one of the most powerful and versatile of image editors, and yet it's modestly priced at less than 100. This combination of high capability and low price makes PhotoImpact an excellent value. If you frequently find yourself performing the same image manipulations on a number of files, you'll appreciate PhotoImpact's batch operations. With this feature, you can select multiple image files and then apply any one of a long list of filters, enhancements, or auto-process commands to all the selected files. What a timesaver PhotoImpact also includes some specialized features for creating Web graphics. The program includes wizards to help you create Web backgrounds, banners, and buttons, and its image-optimization features are especially strong. Although PhotoImpact's Web graphics features aren't quite as slick as those in Fireworks, they're quite good.

Getting Acquainted with Photoshop

Whats not so good about Photo Impact

PhotoImpact's user interface can be a bit quirky and inconsistent in places. Some of PhotoImpact's features, although effective and very useful, feel like they are the result of grafting separate modules onto the program instead of seamlessly integrating the features into the program. Overall, the PhotoImpact user interface is not as polished as Photoshop, Fireworks, or PhotoPaint. To be fair, however, after you get past the program's quirks and idiosyncrasies, you'll find that PhotoImpact is a very capable, Windows-only image editor.

What you can do with Photo Impact

PhotoImpact is a versatile image editor, capable of most any image manipulation you might want to do. Picking just one example to show here is difficult. PhotoImpact comes with a generous assortment of effect filters, and playing around with the filters is lots of fun. Here's an example of a filter that gives an image the look of an oil painting The Oil Paint dialog box disappears as PhotoImpact applies the effect to your image.

Deciding Whether You Need More Than One Image Editor

Obviously, every image editing program doesn't have the same feature set as every other image editor. Some editing tasks, such as cropping a picture, are common to all the editors, but many other features are available in some editors and not in others. Not even Photoshop includes every available image editing feature. If you evaluate your image editing needs thoroughly and inspect the features of the available editors carefully, you might be able to find one editor that has just the right mix of features to match your needs. If you're fortunate, you'll find an editor that has all the features you need, and whatever features are missing from that editor are in areas that you don't care about. It could happen (especially if your image editing needs are modest), but don't count on it. A much more likely scenario is that you find one editor that fulfills most of your image editing needs. Then you need to find a second (or third) editor to handle the editing tasks that your main editor...

Latest Features of Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop Elements

For powerful but easy-to-use entry-level image editors, Photoshop Elements 2.0 was the way to go. Within an impressively short period, however, both were replaced (twice) with newer, better, and more powerful editions with lots of extra features and improvements. For this book's third edition, the amazing advancements in digital cameras in the past few months were only half the battle. I also had to take into account the changes made for Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop Elements 4.0. (Alas, it's also likely that new versions of each program will be available during the life of this book.)

The Relationship between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

As most Photoshopoholics know, Photoshop and Elements share many of the same underpinnings and programming code. Indeed, in some respects, Elements can be considered a version of Photoshop with some capabilities missing or disabled. Their interfaces, dialog boxes, and many features are virtually the same. They use the same filters and also have tool palettes that are quite similar. However, the differences are not quite simple enough to allow Elements to qualify as a watered down version of Photoshop. Development on each of these applications is ongoing and staggered, with releases scheduled at roughly 18-month intervals. The relationship between the two programs becomes even more complex when you consider that Photoshop includes some features that will never show up in Elements, and vice versa. Users of Elements probably don't need the ability to work with 16-bit channels or CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) files, and Photoshop workers wouldn't deign to use some of the quick fixes...

Third Tier Image Editors

The third-tier image editing programs specialize in making the most common image editing tasks fast and easy to do. Typically, it takes just a few mouse clicks to open an image, make a simple adjustment or two, and then print or save the picture. These are the programs to choose when fast and easy is more important to you than powerful and versatile. If your image editing needs are very basic, you might use one of these programs as your main image editor. However, you're more likely to use these programs to complement a more powerful editor. They can make quick work of routine stuff that doesn't require the power of your other editor.

Editing with Photoshop Elements

Downloading to your computer Organizing your images Exploring Photoshop Elements 8 Removing a color cast Sharpening your images Resizing and cropping images Backing up your work our images do you absolutely no good if you keep them on the memory JL card. It's really inconvenient to drag the camera out every time you want to show someone what you've photographed. You also run out of memory cards real quick I know this is a case of the blindingly obvious, but some of you may not have used a digital camera before. In this chapter, I show you how to get the images out of the camera and into your computer. I also show you some basic editing techniques, such as resizing and cropping images. If your camera didn't ship with image-editing software, or you have image-editing software other than Photoshop Elements 8, a word of warning the next three chapters are written specifically for Photoshop Elements 8. However, even if you don't own Photoshop Elements, you will find useful information here.

Microsoft image editing software

Microsoft's image editing software doesn't get the attention that the big-name Microsoft programs get. Despite the Microsoft name, these Windows-only programs aren't the dominant programs in its class. However, all are respected players in the field. Picture It is a simple program that makes it easy to access your images (whether they are in your camera or scanner, or stored on your hard drive) and then edit and print those images with a minimum of fuss. The image editing capabilities are limited when compared with first-tier and second-tier editors, but they cover the basics. You can do things such as cropping, rotating, adjusting brightness or color balance, and fixing red eye and scratches. Picture It also includes a modest collection of effect filters and edge treatments that you can apply to your images. The program even includes some basic painting tools as well as tools for adding text and shapes to your images. adjust shadow, midtone, and highlight levels independently....

Photoshops Print Dialog

Photoshop's Print dialog is not as well understood as it should be. The interface has been redesigned in CS3, as Figure 6.39 shows. The dialog has been rearranged to allow a larger preview window. The pixel resolution of the image is now displayed. There is also a Match Print Colors option that mimics the effect of View Proof Setup with both Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink enabled. The most important thing to understand when you print from Photoshop is that your image file will be processed again by the printer driver. It's important that the instructions you specify in Photoshop do not conflict with those set in the printer driver. The most common mishap occurs when both Photoshop and the printer driver are set to convert the image from its native color space to that of the printer profile. Figures 6.40 through 6.42 highlight the appropriate settings for allowing Photoshop to either handle the color space conversion or hand this responsibility off to the printer driver....

Getting to know Photoshop Elements

When you first launch Photoshop Elements, you have a choice to make which workspace to select, Organize or Editing. The choice depends on what you're using the application for. If you're using the application to sort, rename, and find images, choose the Organize workspace. In this workspace, you can also back up your image collection, manage your catalog of images, add images to the catalog, and much more. You can also edit images you select from the Organize workspace. I refer to the Organize workspace (see Figure 10-1) in upcoming sections. I introduce you to the Editing workspaces in the section, A Tale of Two Editing Workspaces, later in this chapter.

The Photoshop Toolbox

Where in an art studio can you find a toolbox that contains more than 60 artistic tools you use in your everyday creations Hint It's only a few inches long, and it's the Photoshop Toolbox, shown in Figure 10.11. The Photoshop Toolbox provides a number of tools you use to edit images. Among the 60 or so tools offered in this window are brushes, lassos, burning and dodging tools, marquees, erasers, healing brushes, and many more. Figure 10.11 The Photoshop Toolbox You'll notice that whenever you click on a tool in the Toolbox, the options in the Option bar change. Photoshop provides a different set of tool controls for each tool and will display them in the Option bar. I recommend experimenting with each tool and the variations for each tool offered in the Option bar.

Red Eye Correction Tool

Many image editors include some tool for eliminating red-eye. Similar in some respects to a cloning tool, a red-eye correction tool (see Figure 10.20) affects only red areas, useful for removing red-eye in photos of people and animals. The specific operation of this tool differs from one brand of software to another but is usually quite simple and effective. For the best results, zoom in close on the eye take care to paint only within the area directly affected by the red-eye do not allow the brush to stray onto the iris of the eye. Photoshop CS does not include a red-eye correction tool, but it includes a new option that can be used for the same purpose. Color Replacement lets you correct red-eye by setting the mode to Color in the Options bar and the foreground color to black. From this point on, Color Replacement operates in much the same manner as the Red-Eye brush in Elements.

PSD photoshop document

PSD is Photoshop's proprietary format and is the default option when editing images in Photoshop. It is lossless, and allows saving of multiple layers. Each layer contains the same amount of data as the original image therefore saving a layer doubles the file size from the original. For this reason, file sizes can become very large and this makes it an unsuitable format for permanent storage. It is therefore better used as an intermediate format, with one of the other formats being used once the image is finished and ready for output.

I'll include step-by-step instructions for use while experimenting with certain features. None of these is simple, especially when used in an advanced manner. That's why I'll also provide exercises that you can use for practicing with your own images these will also clarify any complex concepts and help you appreciate the value of going beyond the basics in image editing.

Whats New in Photoshop CS and Elements

Photoshop cs and Photoshop Elements share some new features that weren't available in their predecessors. Here's a quick listing of the most important ones I have two complaints about the Filter Gallery. First, it can be gosh-awful slow to load. In this lesson we will go over the adjustments if you are working in Photoshop or Elements. Even if you get the basic work done in Lightroom as shown in Lesson 13.1, it is likely that you will need to do some additional work in Photoshop to clean up some details. Figure 13.18 shows a regular color image taken by the FD7. Figure 13.19 shows the Pastel version of the image. Now open the image in Photoshop. There are a several different ways in Photoshop to get the same job done. The first is to simply increase saturation (Image Adjustments Hue Saturation) as shown in Figure 13.20. The second method is to increase contrast and reduce brightness (Image Adjustments Brightness Contrast) as shown in Figure 13.21. The third method is to increase saturation and reduce brightness in a sort of combination of the first two. This is shown in Figure 13.22. The fourth method is to adjust levels and curves to create what is seen in Figure 13.23. This is the technique that will be demonstrated here.

Importing Your iPhoto Library

When you first open Aperture, a dialog boxappears thatallows you to import your iPhoto Library. If you decide to import your iPhoto Library after you've been using Aperture for a while, select File Import iPhoto Library (Fig. 7.1). Use the Store Files pop-up menu to tell Aperture where you want to store the imported image files.'In the Aperture Library'will copy the files from the iPhoto Library to the Aperture Library. If you have a large iPhoto Library you'll need to consider the storage implications of this, and make sure you have sufficient disk space for the duplicates (Fig. 7.2). Adding new images happens virtually instantaneously, making Picasa ideal for those who regularly add photos. Folders and albums provide the backbone for Picasa's image management, but you can also add multiple-word tags to specific images. Photoshop and Photoshop Elements Painting and Drawing Tools

The two applications' painting and drawing tools are basically the same, but you can find a few in Photoshop that you won't find in Elements and vice versa. Table 3-1 lists all the painting and drawing tools, identifying which of the two applications contains them. Photoshop Elements Photoshop Photoshop You can find more tools for customizing your brushes in Photoshop than in Elements, and more third-party brushes available online were created for Photoshop. You won't feel terribly limited or bored by Elements' brush customization tools, however, and the core settings for size, shape, color, and so on are in both applications. Resizing Images in Photoshop

Adjusting the image size and resolution of photos in Photoshop is more complicated than the adjustment process in Lightroom. In Photoshop, you'll need to resize images for every type of output. Unlike in Lightroom, in Photoshop it is possible to damage your photo's image quality. Most of the time, you'll adjust your image size using Photoshop's Image Size dialog found under the Image menu (Image Image Size). Using Photoshops natural media brushes

Unbeknownst to many photographers, you can choose brush shapes in Photoshop and other options that allow you to come pretty close to imitating natural media brushes. So if you wanted to create a painting from a photograph that looked something like it was painted in oils or watercolor, you can do it. Merge a copy of your layers so you can paint or clone the end result from the original onto a new layer. To do this, duplicate the image, choose the Brush tool, and then use the Brush Presets menu in the Options bar to load natural media brushes. I'm not very good at using Photoshop for this purpose, but here's how I usually go about it (getting good at it is mostly a matter of practice, practice, practice).

Auto Correction in Photoshop

Your automated toolkit in Photoshop is located in the Adjustments submenu of the Image menu and includes Auto Contrast This command looks at how many different tones are in your image. If only a few are present, your image could have excessive contrast. If the image information is spread evenly among hundreds of different tones, your image might be low in contrast. Photoshop attempts to redistribute the tones to provide a more pleasing picture. Auto Color This command attempts to determine whether the color in your image is heavily biased toward one color or another and then removes excessive color to provide some correction. (Remember, no image editor can add color that isn't there colors can only be removed, leaving whatever other colors are present.)

Auto Correction in Photoshop Elements

Elements has the same three tools found in Photoshop, under the Enhance menu Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, and Auto Color Correction. Elements also includes an Auto Smart Fix command that attempts to apply all three of these commands, as appropriate, simultaneously. Photoshop Elements also has a Quick Fix mode (select it by clicking the Quick Fix tab on the right side of the main window), shown in Figure 5-1, with an assortment of correction tools for general fixes, lighting and contrast, color, and sharpening. Each of these has an Auto button that you can click to apply the automatic version of that correction, as well as sliders for applying the fixes manually. This lesson will show you how to create images that look similar to those produced by Holga cameras. In this lesson you will be starting with a digital image and using Photoshop. First we need to determine the characteristics of a Holga photograph. Since it has a plastic lens, a Holga photograph tends to be soft and have flare in the highlights. Depending on the film insert that is used, the image may have vignetting that gives it dark edges. These are the things we need to look at as we work on our image. Figure 15.3 is the image we will be working on. After opening the image in Photoshop, we see that the image needs some minor retouching done to smooth the skin. Next we duplicate the Background layer as shown in Figure 15.4 (Layer Duplicate Layer). With that new layer selected, we add Gaussian blur, which is shown in Figure 15.5 (Filter Blur Gaussian Blur).

Filters allow you to apply groups of effects and formats to your images, whether to a specific selected area or to the entire image on one or more of its layers. You can use filters to add or change the color and texture of your images or to add patterns. Each of the filters in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements enables you to control how the filter affects your image, and most filters give you a preview so that you don't have to formally apply the filter to your image until you see how it will look. Telling you everything you need to know about using filters is beyond the scope of this book. After all, Photoshop and Elements each include more than 100 different filters that span a broad range of special effects. But this chapter certainly gets you started using these fascinating tools. Step 7 Select Image Settings

In Photoshop, I confirm that I have the right sizing and print resolution settings under Image Image Size (see Figure 8.13). I adjust the Printer Resolution to size the image for my paper. (You might want to review the section on resizing and resampling in Chapter 3 if you're still confused about this.) I use the resizing scaling (not resampling) solution to end up with a print size of 8.6 X 5.7 inches at 300 ppi. The Photoshop Elements Styles and Effects Tab Palette

The Effects are actually canned applications of Elements' filters using a predetermined series of steps, much like a macro. Watch the status bar at the bottom of the screen as an Effect is applied to see the names of the filters used as they are added in turn.

Take Advantage of Your Photo Editor

Don't automatically toss photos that don't look as good as you'd like. With some judicious use of your photo software's retouching tools, you can brighten underexposed images, sharpen slightly soft (blurry) photos, correct color balance, crop out distracting background elements, and even cover up small blemishes. You can also get really creative and make a photo appear as if it was produced using traditional art media, such as watercolors, chalk, or crayons. Image Processing Software

Digital image processing applications typically are implemented by software calls to an image processing library of functional operators. Many libraries are limited to primitive functions such as lookup table manipulation, convolution and histogram generation. Sophisticated libraries perform more complex functions such as unsharp masking, edge detection and spatial moment shape analysis. The interface between an application and a library is an application program interface (API), which defines the semantics and syntax of an operation. You can create the color negative style of images pretty easily in Photoshop. Start off with your original image and open it in Photoshop. We will use the image shown in Figure 17.4. Next invert the colors of the image with the Invert command (Cmd Ctrl+I or Image Adjustments Invert) as shown in Figure 17.5. The resulting inverted image is seen in Figure 17.6. It is pretty light and needs to be darkened to be really effective. Creating the Image Processing File

You have finished your image session and you have brought the valuable sub-exposure data indoors to be processed into a wondrous deep-sky image. There are a number of hurdles to be overcome before we end up with a pretty picture. The first thing to do is to convert your individual FITS sub-exposures into IEEE floating point format using Maxim DL's Batch Save and Convert routine. This step is not entirely necessary if you do not have the software to carry out the conversion. You now need to convert the files to colour RGB files. Assuming you have the SXV-H9C (or similar) one-shot colour camera, you run the Convert RGB function as a batch conversion using the Command Sequence Window . The Command Sequence Window allows you to convert all your subs into RGB frames using the Convert RGB command. For the SXV-H9C camera you need to have both the X-offset and the Y-offset boxes ticked in the Convert RGB dialog, you will also use the High Quality deBayer mode. If you are using the SXVF-M25C...

Going Crazy with Your Image Editor

Many digital SLR users have more experience fiddling with images in Photoshop than they do taking pictures with a dSLR. After all, Photoshop has been around since 199o, and was an excellent tool for modifying scanned film images long before digital cameras began hitting their stride a decade later. So, odds are, you have no fear of image editing and you might, in fact, be striving to create an image that's as close to your vision as possible in the camera in order to reduce the time you spend in post-processing. All the more reason to take your image editor to its limit and work on special effects (like the one shown in Figure 15-12) that unleash your creativity.

Photoshop Filter Effects

Filters in Photoshop work differently than those that you attach to your camera's lens (see Chapter 11). With so many choices, menu bars, values, colors, and patterns to choose from, you might wonder why you even need a camera at all As a photographer, though, I'm sure you want to work with your own images, because in Photoshop, starting with your own exposures can let you create many effects from the same shot. Creating a free watermark in Photoshop

There is another free way to protect your images use Photoshop (or any other layer-supporting image editor) to superimpose your copyright information over the image. Unlike the Digimarc watermark, these are readily visible. To do this, simply create a new transparent layer at the top of the Layers palette and then use the Text tool to type in any size and style that will fit inside the image frame. You can make the watermark semi-transparent by adjusting the layer's Transparency or Fill sliders. If you have lots of contrast in the print, use transparent type and a Layer Style that creates a dark edge (choose Window * Layer Styles to get a thumbnail dialog that will automatically apply the style shown). This way, your watermark will be readable in both light and dark areas of the photo.
