Here's a look at four basic lighting effects you can create with a flash/ diffuser setup. Left to right, from top:

• Main flash, no diffuser—A e strong shadows make this shot our least favorite. It's an example of why you really need to shoot with more than an offcamera flash.

• Main flash fired though a diffuser—Notice the soft shadow on the model's left side (camera right).

• Main flash and fill-light fired through a diffuser—Nice, too. See how the fill-light illuminates the shadow area. It's more effective at minimizing shadow than the reflector.

• Main flash and fill-light fired through a diffuser and a hair light added—It's quite nice. But there's more to come. Read on!
