Welcome to the first book in our new Creative ESSENCE series. This series of "how-to" books is for mid- to advanced-level artists. Creative ESSENCE is all about the essence of bringing 3D characters to life. Each book will focus on a single topic. All books in the series will also be complemented with DVDs and web releases of the valuable digital assets developed and illustrated in the books. Over time, we hope that this series will become the de-facto material for teaching methods and providing world class assets for artists to bring their characters to life.

This first ESSENCE book is all about creating photo-real human faces for games and film. It looks at the best practices for modeling and texturing a human face from photographs. In the next ESSENCE book, we will focus on rigging and animating photo-real human faces. Each ESSENCE book will bring together between six and ten of the world's most talented 3D artists in their area of expertise. They will work with a core data set that will subsequently be available to artists through the www.CGSociety.org community—the world's largest community of professional digital artists—which we have created and operate.

The team for ESSENCE: The Face includes: Paul Fedor (artist, director, and former texture guru for Sony in its PlayStation 3 cinematics department); Hong Suck Suh (3D modeler for Sony's cinematic department, with game and movie credits including 'Van Helsing' and 'The Mask 2'); Peter Levius (co-founder of 3D.SK, the CG photo reference web site for game and movie creators); Steven Stahlberg (co-author of d'artiste Character Modeling and renowned 3D artist); Matt Hartle (render guru with film credits on 'Van Helsing' and 'Scorched'); and Dr Mark Snoswell. Founder of Ballistic Media (parent company of both Ballistic Publishing and the CGSociety) and President of the CGSociety.

Future ESSENCE titles will include: The Face- Rigging and Animation; The Body— Modeling and Texturing; Detailing Characters, Digital Sculpting and Advanced Texturing; The Body Rigging and Animation; Creatures—Wings, Fins. Scales and Talons; Effects—Fur, Hair and Clothing.
