Pull Out Farther

The problem: Like just about everyone the world over, we're total suckers for pictures of baby animals. But, in a rare judgement by the Fix Team, we think that this photo is cropped too tightly—It lacks context, and crowds the little leopard's face too much in a too-small frame.

What now: Photographer Pam Wood of Watsonvllle, CA (www.pixelpame.com), sent us her original JPEG, a very nice off-center composition with a defocused background. We used Photoshop's Shadow/Highlight tool to tone down the background highlights, plus Levels to make the leopard's spots true black. We also lightened up the eyes with Curves.

Next time: Forget the crop and embrace your inner Rule of Thirds.

Tech info: Canon 5D with 24-105mm f/4L Canon EF IS lens. Exposure, 1/320 sec at f/7.1, ISO 400. Adjustments in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS3. ©
