More graphic designers are recognizing the value of formal training at least two out of three people entering the field today have a college degree or some college education. About 250 colleges and art schools offer art and graphic design programs that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. At many schools, graphic design students must take a year of basic art and design courses before being accepted into the bachelor's degree program. In addition, applicants to the bachelor's degree programs in graphic arts may be asked to submit samples of their work to prove artistic ability. How To Sell Your Photos for Books Postcards and Stock Photography

My main task is the layout (which takes far more time than the photography or writing ). I use an Apple Mac computer (9500 132 with 128Mb of RAM - pretty basic now but it cost me a fortune ) with Microsoft Word for the text, Adobe Photoshop for photo preparation, and Quark XPress for layout. If you're not into the computer thing, you could ask a graphic designer to layout your book for you. This may cost 3,000 - 10,000. If monitors should be regularly calibrated to a known standard, the next question is to what standard Although the prepress graphic design portion of the color-viewing industry is based around a white point of D50 (5000K), many digital workers have shifted their monitors to D65, a much cooler, brighter color. Although a lot of this is personal preference and also dependent on the monitor and room brightness levels, D50 is too dim and yellow to my eye, and D65 seems to match a nearby D50 viewing light more closely, even if that sounds illogical. I also choose a gamma setting of 2.2, which seems better-suited to most computer systems.

General Considerations For Web Sites

Carefully consider the real need for sophisticated graphics and other elements that increase load time, reduce reliability, and possibly subtract from your message. Are you a photographer or Web master This might be particularly important to wedding and portrait photographers, since your clients may have less powerful computers and slower Internet access, while art directors and graphic designers have more powerful computers, often with high-speed Internet access.

Slightly longer focal length for objective work where steep perspective and distortion are undesirable, and keep close viewpoints with a wide-angle lens for rare dramatic effects. Technique No i Fine Black Borders

The image below was digitally captured on a foggy day in the Front Range foothills west of Denver, Colorado. The area of sky backlighting the scene blends too much into the surrounding white of the paper and window mat that will lie on top of it, so I decided that the image would benefit from a fine black border, similar to the one I would make in the darkroom. This type of technique is also used in graphic design and other imaging applications in the form of drop shadows and other unobtrusive borders.

Using Layers to Create a Theme

For the purposes of this book, I leave heavy rendering of dozens of images to graphic designers. From a photographer's perspective (more specifically, this art photographer), if a photographic image is overdone with Photoshop, you move it into a different category of art more toward graphics. For now, digital photography graphic designs have not sold widely as prints without the aid of mass production. In other words, designs do sell but mostly if they're part of a poster produced as part of an event, a gallery opening, movie premiere, or stage production. Turning professional

Editorial advertising photography means working close with designers. Catalogue work, particularly, justifies the use of digital studio photography direct to desktop publishing (DTP). Advertising work is heavily planned -you usually work on a layout within a team including a creative director, a graphic designer and a copywriter. You must be organized to meet tight deadlines.

Art direction

The graphic designer and art director's role is to take all the components (photograph, headline, body copy, client logo) and assemble them in a cohesive form. The finished piece of art work must be acceptable to the client and capable of being produced and printed to budget. After the initial briefing at which the photographer is informed of all the requirements of the photograph, most clients will request an estimate of costs to produce the photograph. Upon acceptance of this estimate a period of time (pre-production) is allowed in which to prepare for the shoot. This involves the complete organisation of all the elements required to be in the final photograph. It is at this stage the photographer should offer information and advice regarding the practicalities of the layout. If it is obvious to the photographer elements of the layout are not achievable at a practical or financial level it should be mentioned at the briefing or during the pre-production period. For the sake of simplicity, we can organize the myriad of freelance choices into a few large categories commercial photography, retail photography, and fine art photography. These categories differ mainly in the way images are marketed and sold, by the way, and less by image content, talent, or skill. Examples of commercial photography include annual reports, freelance editorial, advertising, fashion and lifestyle, and product illustration. It is a very diversified field. Photographers who choose a commercial photography career do not usually deal with the general public. They most often market and sell their work to art buyers and art directors, graphic designers, and editors.

I first became interested in portraiture photography while I was learning the ropes of graphic design. I began saving and finally invested in a Canon EOS 400D to mainly focus on portraiture. Upon gaining experience, I registered with a modelling website with a view to getting into fashion photography. Since last August when I joined, I have grown fond of using prime lenses on shoots, from the 35mm, 50mm and just recently the 85mm. I like depth of field in my work and these lenses help achieve this desired effect. Given my short time in the fashion industry, like many other photographers I like to expand my boundaries and take my photography that extra step further.

One In A Million

Among the lilies, her trained eye quickly located this needle in the haystack. Available as part of the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite that also includes graphic design page layout software and software for creating web graphics and Macromedia Flash movies, Photo-Paint is highly advanced software. It allows the user to work with layers (described earlier) and includes a vast range of tools, each allowing for precise control. Many are useful for photo editing, and the program includes numerous image-adjustment filters as well, for achieving effects such as sharpening ( with four tools), blurring, smoothing, softening, and a great deal more. The Corel software is also compatible with many so-called Photoshop plugin filters, useful for expanding its versatility. for about 400, including CorelDRAW 11 (graphic design and animation software) as well as R.A.V.E. 2 (for web graphics design.) Some photographers are using Graphics Suite as their primary image editor, often because of its many tools for creating graphics for web and other applications.

Adobe Photoshop CS

Photoshop CS boasts virtually every capability that a graphic designer, publisher, or commercial studio will ever need, but many of its features specifically target the photographer (see Figure 4.9). Although it provides many uncomplicated ways to adjust your images such as Auto Contrast, Auto Levels, and Auto Color correction, plus a tool that can be used for red-eye removal Photoshop also includes advanced tools that don't limit what you can achieve. A veritable cottage industry has developed over the years, providing videos, seminars, workshops, and books such as Photoshop CS Savvy by Steve Romaniello (Sybex, 2004) on getting the most from this complex, multifaceted software.

Printed Material

Mailing a postcard is a common approach for stock agencies and commercial assignment photographers. When you're announcing your new Web site, make the address a prominent part of the card. Postcards are most often targeted to art directors and graphic designers at ad agencies, to independent graphic design firms, and to companies with in-house departments that produce some form of advertising or internal communications. Postcards can also be effective when sent to photo editors at magazines. I wouldn't expect a postcard to attract much business for wedding or portrait photographers, unless you can get a mailing list for a demographic that you specialize in. Otherwise, the mailing would be prohibitively large for the return.

However, I didn't get really interested in children's portrait photography until my twin girls (born in 2002) were ten months old. I bought my first digital SLR, and six months later I was photographing not only my children, but kids in our play group, and those of friends and family. I had fun, gave out prints, and word of mouth began rolling and still does. Now I love photographing children, but 85 percent of my subjects are between zero weeks (extremely fresh babies only days old ) and one year. I also photograph pregnant women. Ten years of graphic design and Photoshop experience before getting into photography helped my learning curve immensely....

The process

The strength of each sequence is discussed and the communication is established. Images are selected from each category that reinforce the chosen communication. Images that contradict the chosen communication are removed. Cropping and linking images are discussed and the final sequence established. Further work may include the input of a graphic designer who will discuss layout and the relative size and position of images on the printed page.
