Summary

Small-format aerial photography has worthwhile applications for many aspects of architectural planning, construction, and renovation as well as general property survey and management. Primary advantages include low-height, large-scale images that depict architectural features in detail. Oblique shots provide unusual viewing angles and portray building sites in relation to surrounding features. In some cases, unmanned tethered platforms—kite or blimp—may be the only feasible way to position a camera close to a high monument or tall building for aerial inspection. Vertical views may be acquired for accurate survey and mapping purposes where high spatial resolution (5-10 cm) is necessary. The ability to rephotograph sites periodically during construction or renovation adds an important temporal dimension often lacking from conventional aerial photography.
