Basic Elements Of Photographic Composition

Photographic composition begins with color or gray tones; it is through color variations that we see and interpret what is present in the picture. The visible objects in the scene are further defined based on their sizes, shapes, patterns, textures, and contrast with each other. Additional visual elements include the relative placement and balance between objects in the picture. Photographic composition has much in common with landscape painting, and many general guidelines have been elaborated over the centuries for creating effective visual imagery in both media. Like all such rules of thumb, however, exceptions often lead to dramatic pictures. Further considerations apply to small-format aerial photography because of its unusual vantage point from above.
